Roleplay & Roleplay Etiquette

ROLEPLAY
Havn County is, above all else, a place that welcomes story.
Roleplay is not required here, but it is strongly encouraged. This county was built to be a safe and nonjudgmental environment where people can learn, experiment, and grow into roleplay at their own pace. Whether someone arrives fully formed with years of experience or uncertain and testing their first steps, they will find patience rather than pressure.
Questions are answered quickly and thoroughly. Curiosity is not treated as ignorance, and mistakes are viewed as part of learning rather than something to be corrected with sharp edges. Havn believes that confidence comes from being allowed to try.
To help guide newcomers and strengthen community ties, Havn County holds regular gatherings. Once a month, an out-of-character community meeting is hosted in Discord voice chat, giving players a space to ask questions, share ideas, and stay informed. Once a month, the county also hosts an in-character welcome wagon event in game, where residents introduce the land, explain local systems, and show new arrivals around.
Both in-character and out-of-character events are part of life in Havn County. When participating in an in-character event, players are expected to be in character and to have a completed character sheet. This ensures clarity, continuity, and respect for the shared story being told.
Character sheets are not required for general play, but they are encouraged. They help ground a character in the world and make interactions richer and more consistent over time. Blank templates and completed examples are available for anyone who wishes to use them.
ROLEPLAY ETIQUETTE
Roleplay in Havn County is built on mutual respect between players and characters. Out-of-character opinions, assumptions, or judgments should never be used to diminish, correct, or censor an in-character action, reaction, or storyline. If something occurs in character, it is understood to belong to the story being told, not the person behind the screen.
Disagreement may exist in character without becoming conflict out of character. Players are expected to separate intent from portrayal and to approach unfamiliar choices with curiosity rather than criticism. When clarification is needed, it should be asked kindly and out of character, not imposed publicly or through confrontation.
Rockstar and cfx Terms of Service must be followed at all times.
For those seeking deeper immersion, certain areas within Havn County will be designated as roleplay-only spaces. These locations are intended for uninterrupted in-character interaction and should be respected as such by anyone entering them.
Outside of these areas, individual players may determine the nature of their own properties. A homestead, shop, or gathering place may be declared fully in-character, fully out-of-character, or mixed at the owner’s discretion. That choice should be honored by all visitors.
When to Go Out of Character
Out-of-character communication is best used as a tool for care, not control. There are moments when stepping briefly outside the story preserves trust, clarity, and comfort for everyone involved.
Going out of character is appropriate when consent needs to be checked, boundaries need to be clarified, or a misunderstanding may impact another player’s enjoyment. It is also appropriate when technical issues, mechanics, or server systems interfere with an in-character interaction.
OOC conversation should never be used to direct another character’s choices, rewrite their intentions, or publicly correct their roleplay. Once clarity has been reached, returning to character is encouraged.
Conflict, Injury, and Consent
Conflict is a natural part of storytelling, but it should always be approached with communication and care. Violence, injury, emotional manipulation, or high-stakes confrontation should never be used to force another player into a situation they did not consent to.
Before escalating conflict beyond casual interaction, players are encouraged to check in out of character. Surprise may exist in character, but consent must exist between players.
Permadeath and Lasting Consequences
Permanent character death is not assumed in Havn County. It is a significant narrative choice and should never be imposed without clear consent. Injury, trauma, or loss may be explored, but they are never required.
Romance, Attachment, and Emotional Storylines
Romantic and emotionally intimate roleplay must remain respectful and consensual. No character owes another character attraction, affection, or emotional labor. Clear communication out of character is encouraged.
Staff as Story Stewards
Staff exist to facilitate safety, clarity, and enjoyment. Their role is not to dictate stories, but to help them unfold smoothly. Intervention is calm, private when possible, and focused on resolution rather than punishment.
Havn County does not demand performance. It offers a space where stories can be practiced, shaped, and shared — one conversation, one character, and one quiet moment at a time.
