Frequently Asked Questions

What is the horse situation in Havn County?

Why are horses such a big part of Havn County?

Horses aren’t simply transportation in Havn County. They are a substantial part of life here. Whether you’re looking for a dependable trail companion, building a ranch full of horses, interested in breeding, or looking forward to competing in equestrian events, there is plenty for a horse enthusiast to do. Of course, you’re also perfectly welcome to find one horse you love and happily ride that horse for the rest of your days.

We consider ourselves a HORSE SERVER above many other things. Because of that, we don’t gatekeep horses by limiting them to people with breeder or trainer jobs, or even to those who own stables or ranches. Everyone can choose from the available breeds and build their own horse experience in whatever way suits them.

How do I get a horse?

Havn County has stables where you can begin your search for a horse.   You may purchase from our huge selection in any one of the county stables.   Take your time and look around.  Different horses appeal to different riders, and finding the right one is part of the fun.

Anyone can purchase any breed available in the stables, and players frequently have horses for sale as well. You can also capture, tame, and purchase wild horses.

Once you’ve found your new companion, our horse systems give you plenty of opportunities to make that horse feel like your own. Everyone has access to our training facilities, which continue to grow as we add new equestrian content.

We have a wide variety of horse props and facilities, including dressage, show jumping, cross country, barrel racing, training areas, barns, riding centers, and arenas to play in. You can even breed your own horses, establish your own stable name and brand, and hold your own horse auctions.

Can I own more than one horse?

Yes. You certainly aren’t limited to a single horse. Some residents keep only a favorite riding horse or two, while others discover that collecting horses becomes something of a lifestyle.

If you happen to be one of those people who says, “I really don’t need another horse,” immediately before acquiring another horse, you’ll probably feel right at home in Havn County.

Our hard stable cap is 200 horses.   We feel this should be sufficient.   Probably.

Can I breed horses?

Yes. Horse breeding is available to everyone in Havn County who wants to take their equestrian experience beyond simply purchasing horses from a stable.

Breeding can become an enjoyable part of developing a ranch, establishing a breeding program, working with your horses, and creating your own stories around them. Breeding prices are also intentionally affordable so the system remains accessible rather than becoming something reserved for only a handful of players.

Are there different breeds and appearances?

Absolutely. One of the pleasures of horse ownership is finding a horse that suits both your character and your personal tastes. Havn County offers plenty of variety, so don’t be surprised if a trip to “just look at horses” turns into considerably more shopping than you originally intended.

We run the SireVLC horse and stable systems and add additional horse models as they become available.

We also have actual English tack for those who prefer English-style riding, along with plenty of options for riders whose tastes lean toward Western tack and traditional ranch life.

Can I own a ranch?

Yes. Ranches and rural properties are part of Havn County, giving players who enjoy the equestrian and agricultural side of the world an opportunity to build a life outside of town.

Property availability and ownership requirements may apply, particularly because some locations are limited and we want actively used properties to remain available to active residents.

You don’t need to own a ranch, however, to participate in Havn County’s horse systems.

Can horses have brands?

Yes. Branding is part of the horse and ranching experience in Havn County.

A brand can give a ranch, stable, breeding program, or collection of horses its own identity and is another way to make your place in the county uniquely yours.

Players can register their own brand through the Help Desk Brand Ticket system.

Does Havn County have horse racing?

Yes. Horse racing is one of the equestrian activities you’ll find in Havn County.

Whether you’re interested in competing, watching from the sidelines, or simply discovering whether your favorite horse is nearly as fast as you’ve been telling everyone it is, races provide another reason to get horses and riders together.

Players are welcome to organize and host their own races and equestrian events. We also have large riding centers that support our racing systems, along with betting and race-training facilities.

What about barrel racing?

We have that too.

Barrel racing gives riders a different kind of challenge, where speed is only part of the equation. Handling your horse cleanly through the course can matter just as much as how quickly you can run it.

We also have dedicated barrel-racing training locations where riders can practice before putting their reputation on the line in front of everyone else.

Can I participate in show jumping?

Yes. Show jumping is another part of Havn County’s equestrian world.

Riders interested in something beyond racing can put themselves and their horses to the test over a jumping course, practice on their own, or simply come along to watch other riders compete.

We particularly encourage players to host their own show-jumping events and create unique courses using the facilities and props available around the county.

Do I have to compete to enjoy horses?

Not at all.

Competition is only one way to enjoy horses in Havn County. Take a quiet trail ride, explore the county on horseback, build a ranch, breed horses, train them, ride with friends, or simply spend entirely too much time deciding which horse you want to take out today.

There is absolutely no requirement to turn horse ownership into a competition.

Sometimes it’s perfectly acceptable to own a beautiful horse simply because you wanted a beautiful horse.

Can I ride with other players?

Absolutely. Some of the best ways to see Havn County are from horseback, and there’s no reason you have to do it alone.

Grab a friend, organize a trail ride, visit another ranch, head into the mountains, or gather a group and see where the road takes you.

Just remember that “we’ll only be gone for an hour” has a remarkable tendency to become an entire evening.

Horse people understand this phenomenon.

Are there supernatural or unusual mounts in Havn County?

Havn County has never been particularly good at limiting itself to the ordinary.

While most residents will spend their time with considerably more traditional horses, there are some unusual ways to travel around the county for characters who qualify for them.

If your interests lean toward the supernatural, magical, or simply strange, you may discover that four ordinary hooves aren’t the only option available.

I’m a serious horse person. Is there enough here for me?

We certainly hope so.

Havn County was built with a genuine appreciation for horses and the people who love them. Between horse ownership, breeding, training, ranch life, branding, racing, barrel racing, dressage, show jumping, cross country, trail riding, horse auctions, riding centers, and simply exploring a beautiful world from horseback, horses can be as small or as large a part of your Havn County experience as you’d like them to be.

And we’re still adding things.

Are we missing something you’d love to see? Talk to a staff member and make a suggestion. Some of our favorite additions to Havn County have started with someone saying, “You know what would be really cool…?”

Where can I learn more about horses in Havn County?

The Horses section of the Havn County Wiki contains more detailed guides to our individual horse systems, activities, facilities, and features. This FAQ is only an introduction.  If horses are what brought you here, you’ll definitely want to explore the rest of that section.  You may want to clear a little room in your stable first.

What kind of experience is Havn County?

What makes Havn County special?

Havn County is a little difficult to put into a single box. We’re part western sandbox, part roleplay community, part horse and ranching world, and part supernatural playground. You can live a relatively ordinary frontier life, build a ranch, own horses, run a business, explore the wilderness, attend events, or wander considerably farther into the strange and unexplained. Roleplay is optional, and there is no single “correct” way to enjoy the county. We have deliberately built Havn County around giving players choices and letting them create the kind of experience they enjoy.

Is Havn County a roleplay server?

Yes and no. Havn County supports and encourages roleplay, but we don’t require players to remain in character every moment they’re logged in. Some residents create detailed characters and ongoing stories, while others prefer horses, exploration, businesses, collecting, activities, or simply spending time with friends. Both are welcome here. We consider Havn County a sandbox with roleplay rather than a server where roleplay is the only reason to play.

Do I have to participate in the supernatural side of Havn County?

Absolutely not. The supernatural is an important part of Havn County, but it is only one part of a much larger world. You can spend your entire time here as an ordinary human rancher, business owner, horse enthusiast, hunter, traveler, or citizen. If ghosts, vampires, strange lights in the sky, and things that howl in the woods aren’t your cup of tea, you don’t have to become one of them.

What can I actually do in Havn County?

Quite a lot. Havn County has horses, ranching, homes, collecting, herbing, a plethora of missions, businesses, jobs, hunting, fishing, gathering, exploration, trail riding, community events, racing, show jumping, supernatural doings, unusual creatures, and plenty of places to discover. Some activities provide progression and goals, while others exist simply because they’re fun. The Wiki is the best place to explore everything available, and it continues to grow as new features are added.

Do I need to know RedM before joining?

No. Experienced RedM players are welcome, but newcomers are too. There is a lot to discover, and nobody expects you to understand every system on your first day. The Wiki contains guides for many of Havn County’s features, and staff and community members can help when something isn’t clear.

Is Havn County historically accurate?

Havn County is inspired by the American West and the world of Red Dead Redemption, but historical simulation isn’t our goal. You’ll find plenty of western atmosphere alongside creative liberties, modern conveniences where they improve gameplay, and an unmistakable supernatural streak. We prefer an immersive world that is fun to inhabit over requiring everyone to pass a history exam before entering the saloon.

Can I own a house, ranch, or business?

Yes. Property and businesses are part of life in Havn County, although some opportunities have activity or eligibility requirements. Those requirements help make sure limited properties remain in the hands of players who are actively using them rather than sitting abandoned while other residents are looking for a home.

Can I own and breed horses?

Absolutely. Horses are a substantial part of Havn County. Players can own horses and participate in the broader equestrian side of the county, including breeding, training, riding, and events. If you’re the sort of person who can happily spend an evening doing absolutely nothing except fussing over horses, you’ll probably fit in just fine. We even have English tack.

Is Havn County still being developed?

Very much so. Havn County is an evolving world. New activities, locations, supernatural abilities, quality-of-life improvements, events, and other features are added as the county grows. The Wiki itself will continue changing as new systems are introduced and existing ones are expanded.

I don’t know anyone here. Can I still join?

Of course. You don’t need an existing group or established storyline to become part of Havn County. Arrive on your own, explore, attend events, meet people, find work, or simply take some time to learn your way around. Communities have a funny way of beginning with two strangers saying hello.

What are the most commonly asked character questions?

Do I have to roleplay in Havn County?

No. Roleplay is completely optional in TCG’s Havn County. You’re welcome to create a character and simply enjoy the sandbox, explore, own horses, participate in activities, and experience the county at your own pace. If you decide you’d like to try roleplay later, you can jump in whenever you’re comfortable.

Do I need to submit a character sheet before I can play?

No. Character sheets are optional for normal human characters. You can create your character and enter Havn County without submitting an application. Character sheets are required if you want to play a supernatural character and receive access to supernatural abilities.

Can my character be supernatural?

Absolutely. Havn County has a wide variety of supernatural possibilities. Supernatural characters and their abilities do require staff approval, however, so you’ll need to submit a character sheet through our Discord before receiving access to those abilities.

Can I start as a human and become supernatural later?

Yes. In fact, that can make for a wonderful character story. Your character doesn’t have to arrive in Havn County with everything about their future already decided. If their story eventually leads in a supernatural direction, you can submit a character sheet or update your existing one and request approval at that time.

Does my character have to be historically accurate?

Havn County is inspired by the late 1800s and the world of Red Dead Redemption, but it is also a fictional sandbox with supernatural and fantastical elements. We encourage characters who feel like they belong in the setting without expecting everyone to be a walking 1890s history book.

Do I need an accent or have to speak “Old West”?

Not at all. Please don’t feel like you need to perform an accent or constantly worry about whether every word existed in 1897. Create a character you’re comfortable playing. Good interaction matters considerably more than putting on a perfect cowboy accent.

Can my character be related to another player’s character?

Certainly, provided everyone involved agrees. Family members, spouses, old friends, enemies, former business partners, traveling companions, and other shared histories can give characters an immediate reason to interact.

Can I change my character’s story later?

Of course. Characters are expected to grow. You don’t need to have their entire life mapped out before you begin. Small details can develop naturally as you play. If you’re changing something significant involving an approved supernatural character or their abilities, however, please speak with staff.

Can I make my character wealthy, famous, powerful, or important in their backstory?

You can certainly give your character an interesting past, but remember that a backstory shouldn’t automatically give you authority over other players or bypass Havn County’s progression. Arriving with something left to earn, discover, or accomplish generally makes for a much more interesting character anyway.

Can my character be evil, an outlaw, or generally unpleasant?

Yes. Characters don’t have to be good people. Villains, criminals, scoundrels, troublemakers, and deeply flawed people can create fantastic stories. Just remember that in-character behavior can have in-character consequences, and character conflict should never become an excuse for treating the player behind the character poorly.

What if I’ve never roleplayed before?

That’s perfectly fine. You don’t need experience to start. Begin with a simple character concept and learn as you go. Havn County staff and experienced community members can help if you’re unsure about character creation, roleplay etiquette, or how to get involved.

What if I don’t know what kind of character I want to make?

Start small. Pick something you already enjoy doing in RedM and build a person around it. If you love horses, perhaps you’re a trainer or ranch hand. If you enjoy exploring, perhaps you’re a naturalist, prospector, tracker, or wandering adventurer. You don’t need an extraordinary concept. Sometimes an ordinary person dropped into an extraordinary county makes the best character of all.

What if my UI disappears?

You can get your UI back immediately if you just open and close your inventory. 🙂
